Chain link gauge chart
In the chain link wire convention below, a lower gauge number identifies a larger nominal wire diameter. Use the inch and millimetre dimensions to check a quotation. This is a reference chart, not a statement of measured KUNYU batch results.
| Gauge designation | Nominal diameter, in | Nominal diameter, mm | Procurement use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 0.192 | 4.88 | Heavy-wire enquiry; review manufacturability, mesh and packing separately |
| 9 | 0.148 | 3.76 | Compare for commercial fabric enquiries |
| 11 | 0.120 | 3.05 | A distinct size from 11.5 gauge |
| 11.5 / 11½ | 0.113 | 2.87 | Lighter-wire enquiry where the project specification permits |
The dimensions above follow the CLFMI product manual. Do not apply an electrical AWG chart to chain link fabric. Agree which layer is being measured, the governing specification and acceptable tolerance.
9 gauge vs 11 gauge vs 11.5 gauge
For the same height, length, mesh and steel grade, the larger wire diameter uses more metal. It changes handling and roll weight, so a cheaper lighter roll is not an equal substitute for a thicker-wire order. Wire size alone does not prove the performance of a complete fence.
For 9 gauge chain link fence procurement, start with the 6 ft × 50 ft galvanized 9 gauge enquiry page. Keep the mesh opening and coating requirement fixed when requesting alternative 11 or 11.5 gauge quotations. The 11 and 11.5 designations must remain separate line items.
PVC coated fabric: core diameter and finished diameter
A coloured roll can be described using a core gauge and a finished gauge. The outside PVC layer adds diameter without adding the same amount of steel. Ask the supplier to state the galvanized steel core diameter and overall coated diameter separately, with the measurement basis identified.
For example, a quotation describing a larger finished diameter over a smaller steel core should not be compared as though the whole outside diameter were steel. Review the coating thickness and process alongside the two diameters. See galvanized vs black PVC coated fabric.
Mesh opening is a separate dimension
Mesh size describes the clear opening between parallel wires forming the diamond. It is not simply the diagonal point-to-point distance across the visible diamond. Ask for the measurement method and a labelled drawing when comparing quotations.
A nominal 50 mm mesh and an exact 2 in mesh are not identical: 2 in converts to 50.8 mm. State the controlling units and tolerance rather than mixing the two descriptions silently.
What to put on the purchase specification
| Field | Required detail |
|---|---|
| Roll size | Height, full roll length and controlling units |
| Wire | Gauge convention, nominal diameter, measured layer and tolerance |
| Mesh | Clear opening, measurement method and tolerance |
| Finish | Zinc requirement or PVC method, core protection and colour sample |
| Edges | Top and bottom knuckle / twist arrangement |
| Inspection | Measured dimensions, coating checks and actual net/gross weight tied to the order |
Send the same checklist to every candidate supplier. Keep proposed substitutions separate from the approved SKU so you can see which part of the quote changed.
Gauge questions
Is 9 gauge thicker than 11 gauge?
Yes, in this chain link convention the nominal diameters are 3.76 mm and 3.05 mm respectively. Confirm the measurement basis and actual order tolerance.
Are 11 gauge and 11.5 gauge interchangeable?
No. They refer to different nominal diameters. A substitution needs buyer approval and an updated specification.
Does 9 gauge guarantee a commercial security rating?
No. The complete design includes fabric, mesh, posts, rails, foundations and gates. State the project's acceptance requirements separately.

The KUNYU C11–C21 metric range lists wire diameters from 2 to 5 mm in specific model combinations. Use the stated millimetre value in the order. For example, the 3 mm wire listed for C13 and C14 should not simply be relabelled as nominal 9 gauge.
For PVC coated enquiries, specify whether a stated diameter describes the steel core or the finished coating. The metric model table does not assign a coating to each model.
