1. Compare the full coating system
PVC-coated and galvanized are not always mutually exclusive. A PVC layer may be applied over galvanized mesh. The useful comparison is the complete construction: steel core, any zinc layer and the polymer outer layer. Darby’s process explanation distinguishes galvanizing before and after mesh manufacture; the difference matters at welded intersections.
| Specification | Galvanized hardware cloth | PVC-coated hardware cloth |
|---|---|---|
| Exposed surface | Zinc finish | PVC outer surface; specify color |
| Underlying protection | Specify zinc application sequence and coating requirement | Identify substrate and whether zinc is present beneath PVC |
| Diameter for structural comparison | Steel-core diameter, separated from coating | Steel-core diameter, not outside PVC diameter |
| Dimensions for fit | Finished clear opening | Clear opening after the polymer layer is applied |
| Inspection focus | Welds, bare areas, coating coverage and cut edges | Coverage, cracks, peeling, abrasion and the underlying wire |
| Selection reason | Project accepts the specified zinc finish | Project needs the specified color or polymer outer surface |
2. Calculate what is beneath the finished diameter
For a uniform round coating, substrate diameter = finished diameter − 2 × radial coating thickness. The substrate may include zinc; establish the bare steel diameter separately when zinc is present. A micrometer reading across PVC does not reveal the amount of steel.
| Example, not a KUNYU specification | Option A | Option B |
|---|---|---|
| Finished outside diameter | 1.50 mm | 1.50 mm |
| Combined radial coating thickness assumed | 0.20 mm | 0.30 mm |
| Calculated steel-core diameter | 1.10 mm | 0.90 mm |
| Steel cross-sectional area, πd²/4 | 0.950 mm² | 0.636 mm² |
Under these illustrative assumptions, Option B contains about 33% less steel cross-sectional area even though both wires measure 1.50 mm outside. This is not a tensile-strength test. It shows why a quotation must separate steel and coating dimensions.
3. Check whether coating reduces the opening
When wire centers stay fixed, clear opening equals center-to-center pitch minus finished wire diameter. With an illustrative 12.70 mm pitch and a finished diameter of 1.50 mm, the clear opening is 11.20 mm. A product described only as “1/2 inch” needs a drawing to show which dimension that label represents.
For example, Darby’s published 2-mesh vinyl-coated item lists a 0.041-inch wire diameter and a 0.459-inch opening. Their sum is 0.500 inch. This is one supplier’s dimensional example, not a KUNYU specification or a statement about bare steel diameter. The distinction follows the clear-opening measurement convention.
4. Match inspection to the reason for choosing the finish
| Buyer priority | Record before production | Check on the supplied batch |
|---|---|---|
| Consistent black or green appearance | Approved physical color sample and finish | Color variation between rolls and exposed patches |
| Coating integrity during handling | Agreed bend/adhesion method and acceptance limits | Cracks, peeling and rubbing at roll contact points |
| Outdoor exposure | Actual moisture, salt, chemical and ground-contact conditions | Evidence for the specified system, tied to the product or batch |
| Fine opening or fitted frame | Finished opening, diameter and tolerance | Opening and wire measurements after coating |
Appearance alone cannot establish corrosion performance. Neither “PVC coated” nor “galvanized” supports a fixed service-life claim without relevant evidence. Check cut ends and installation damage as well as the undamaged surface; a neat outer finish cannot compensate for broken welds.
5. Choose and compare quotations on equal terms
Choose the galvanized option when its specified zinc system meets the exposure and the buyer accepts its appearance. Choose PVC-coated mesh when a polymer outer surface or color is required and the underlying wire and coating system meet the job. For an animal enclosure, check species-specific requirements for the whole assembly; coating color does not establish suitability.
Request two quotes using identical steel diameter, finished clear opening, width, net length and quantity. Show the coating requirements separately. For PVC rolls, include protection against rubbing during shipment and keep an approved color sample for repeat orders. Use the bulk inspection checklist for shipment controls.
